My Career

The Infor Bist Visualizer tool. I spend a lot of time trying to tame this beast. (Image Source: “Product Overview.” Infor.com, 2022, docs.infor.com/birst/latest/en-us/birstdataandmodels/IntroAndGetStart/Product_Overview.html. Accessed 8 Feb. 2026.)

My career is just getting started, and right now it’s a lot of learning as I go (sink or swim). I started working full-time as a supply chain data analyst at Tree Top in mid December while trying to finish out my master’s in data science. Most of my days are spent learning the realities of corporate systems that aren’t always clean, modern, or well documented and then coming home and doing homework (literally). At work, I’ve mostly become the person people come to when they need dashboards built or data connections fixed or adjusted. Because of this, I spend a lot of time in Infor Birst and SQL, but I’ve also been able to work on more interesting projects like sales forecasting and order allocation in Python. Some parts of the job are engaging, others are tedious, and figuring out which is which has been part of the process. All in all, I’m still finding my footing, learning how organizations actually run, and trying to grow while juggling school and work at the same time. It hasn’t always been easy, but I like the people I work with, and for now, that makes the effort feel worth it.

My dear Tyler, could you please work on your homework 6 so I can leave my majestic fingerprint onto your posts.

Hi Tyler! I can relate with you trying to balance work and school at the same as I’m on the same boat. How many quarters do you have left? The project that you’re working on in sale forecasting sounds very interesting. Do you find the content/skills that you’ve learned from your master program applicable and helpful in starting your career?

Breaking: Local hero voluntarily selects “sink or swim” difficulty while simultaneously speedrunning a master’s degree.

Mid-December: casually becomes full-time supply chain data analyst.
Also mid-December: decides sleep is optional.

Nothing says character development like wrestling corporate systems that were last documented during the Renaissance. Becoming the resident “can you fix this dashboard” specialist within weeks is a bold arc. Infor Birst by day, SQL by afternoon, Python forecasting by night. Homework after that. Hydration status unknown.

Respect for surviving legacy systems and still liking the coworkers. That’s the real plot twist.

    Hey Tyler,
Honestly, “sink or swim” while doing a full-time data analyst job and a master’s in data science sounds more like – swim while carrying a laptop, SQL queries, and homework at the same time.

Damn! Its been long since I last read something so cool, a mix of chaos and fun. As you climb up the ladder, I wish you well Tyler. Which other visusalization tools do you use?

This is a cool reflection! I almost relate to the part where some parts are tedious and others a bit more tedious. I am also managing school & work and it has been a journey 🙂 Can’t complain.
